Within 1.5 hours drive of Christchurch is the old French settlement of Akaroa, the mountains of Arthurs Pass, vineyards of Waipara and the thermal springs of Hamner Springs.
Walking around the city you can find all sorts of interesting architecture, as well as a fully restored Victorian electric tram, which takes you pass many of the sights and is well worth the time.
